Training
The first ride on the tandem was almost the last as we wobbled from the shop to our home on the bike. The first task was to set up the bike, in particular seat heights, handlebar positions and choices of pedals. These positions being refined over a period of weeks as our confidence increased along with the distance of our rides. As neither of us had ridden tandem before, the simple things that are taken for granted on a single now required team work. Just wriggling on the seat to get comfortable would throw the bike half a meter to right or left if the driver was unprepared. Over the winter of 2003 and the spring of 2004 matching of a mutual cadence developed, (my natural cadence being about 115, and Paulines’ about 80 – we met at a comfortable 105). Pauline also learnt to anticipate gear changes and breaking and so became relaxed on the seat without a view. During the sumer of 2004 a shakedown ride in the form of a holiday in Scotland will prepare us for camping as well as riding up and down more hills than those that exist in Norfolk. This will also include riding longer distances with the bike fully laden.
We eat whatever we want and some things we shouldn't
