Planned Route

Route Planning

Although the sign at Victoria is the start of the Trans Canadian Highway we intend to travel from Pacific coast to Atlantic coast. Vancouver to Cap-des-Rosiers on the Gaspe Peninsula (or should it be ‘Last Gasp’?). Cap-des-Rosiers is about a one week ride East of Quebec and a total distance of about 3500 miles from Vancouver.

When planning any journey any inside information is invaluable. We have both toured Canada on holiday and have a working knowledge of British Columbia. In addition Pauline has relatives in Canada with the closest contact being Jian and Eileen in Kamloops. Jim has been invaluable in providing road maps and camping guides. Our intention is to take camping equipment to be self sufficient during the journey but will use Hotel and B&B accommodation when it is available. The first big step along the way, with more than one big climb on route, will be to reach Kamloops. Our intended route being to depart the coast at Horseshoe bay on the northern edge of Vancouver and use the ‘Sea to Sky highway’ to get to Whistler. The route then visits Lillooet and climbs over the Coastal Range towards Kamloops. A good rest at Kamloops will set us up for the run to Revelstoke ‘The Gateway to the Rockies’. The route over the Rockies is toward Lake Louise before heading downhill past Banff to Calgary.

Calgary is 600 miles into the journey or 1/6th of the way. But more importantly we will have crossed the Rockies and be heading for the prairies and middle Canada. In Calgary we will be visiting Anar Simpson. I met Anar in Dubai when on a business trip and was invited to call in during our travels.

From Calgary the route will be, Regina – Winnipeg – Thunder Bay – North Bay – Ottawa – Montreal – Quebec and on to the Coast at Cap-des-Rosiers. But at the moment that is another story
